Last night, Phil Lesh celebrated Valentine’s Day on stage at The Fillmore in San Francisco, along with his Friends lineup consisting of Jason Crosby, Stu Allen, John Molo, Grahame Lesh, and Stanley Jordan. During the concert, the group dotted the setlist with odes to the holiday, including first-time covers for this group of performers, who touched on the Grateful Dead’s beloved songbook of originals and covers.
Apart from classic material akin to Lesh’s history in the Bay Area jamband, yesterday’s presentation was chocked full of thoughtful inclusions that hit on the Valentine’s Day motif, drawing in connections from a floral theme, “Ramble on Rose,” “Scarlet Begonias” and “Sugar Magnolia” during the night’s first half.
Also, hitting on the night’s love-dripped approach were covers, including Robbie Robertson’s love ballad “Broken Arrow” and Frank Sinatra’s “My One and Only Love.” After the set break, the band reemerged on stage, delivering a collective rendition of “Not Fade Away,” flanked by the absolute stunner “Shining Star,” a Manhattan original revived by Jerry Garcia in his solo project. The aforementioned tune represented a debut for this group.
The second set continued with an oldie, the 1967 release “The Golden Road (to Unlimited Devotion),” ahead of “Let it Grow,” sans sister tune starter “Weather Report Suite.” Clicking back into the night’s theme, Jordan led the group through Van Morrison’s romance-infused “Moon Dance.”
After the final song of the latter frame, a collective take on “Uncle John’s Band,” Lesh delivered his Donor Rap, followed by band introductions. For the final piece of music, the group dusted off The Beatles, “All You Need is Love,” a tune only performed once prior by Lesh & Friends on August 10, 2013, in San Rafael, Calif.
