Phoebe Bridgers Debuts Cover of Tom Waits’ “Day After Tomorrow”

Today, indie-rocker Phoebe Bridgers has shared her rendition of “Day After Tomorrow” off Tom Waits’ 2004 studio album Real Gone. 

The track features Bridgers’ bandmates Marshall Vore (drummer) and Harrison Whitford (guitar), along with a backing choir and other talented musicians such as Rob Moose, Blake Mills and Marcus Mumford. 

“Day After Tomorrow” is Phoebe Bridgers’ fourth annual holiday cover, postdating Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Thru December” (2020), Simon and Garfunkel’s “7 O’Clock News/ Silent Night” (2019), McCarthy Trenching’s “Christmas Song” (2018) and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” (2017). 

Bridgers captures Waits’ soulful tone and pairs it with a light fluttery guitar and melancholy keys not far off from the original. The essence of John Prine is present in the lyrical arrangement and realistic descriptions of a midwest winter landscape using classic Americana undertones and leaving listeners yearning for the holiday season. 

Proceeds generated by sales of the single will go to the Local Integration and Family Empowerment Divison of the International Institute of Los Angeles, which provides aid to immigrants, refugees, low-income workers and survivors of human trafficking.
