In Oslo-bred producer Kent Tonning’s mind, punk and dance music are symbiotic, imagining a universe where early Sum 41 bump up against Flume.

That vision gushes to the fore on MRD’s new MISLED YOUTH EP, which melds scuzzy guitars with synths that build into a sprawling trance. The project comes with a seven-minute concept film that was shot in Vienna and produced by Live From Earth and Mad Decent, the label founded by Diplo. Bridging the project’s four tracks, the visual captures skate culture, teenage hijinks (experimenting with Mentos and soda, partying in basements, etc.), and the spirit of DIY — mirroring Tonning’s early days in punk bands before he secluded himself in his bedroom, spending hours learning how to make beats on Ableton. By its end, the video embodies those times of scattered, uninhibited youth that are both playful and nostalgic.

“Shooting the video was incredibly fun,” MRD tell AP. “It truly felt like we were living in that wild mansion. Tim really captured a special day there.”

“Kent showed me clips that he found of his teenage days that we also showed at the beginning of the video,” director Tim Rudle adds. “We tried to create those same teenage feelings that day. Not only on camera, but also on site.”
