Self Esteem has announced a new album called ‘A Complicated Woman’, and today shares the first track ‘Focus Is Power’.

The singer – real name Rebecca Lucy Taylor – has announced ‘A Complicated Woman’ on social media today, which is set for release on April 25 via Polydor.

With news of the album she has shared her new track ‘Focus Is Power’, a goosebump-inducing ballad, featuring a choir of mainly female voices, about self-confidence and determination.

“You see, it wasn’t up to me but now it could be / But now I see it clear with every passing of each year / I deserve to be here…” the lyrics go. Listen to ‘Focus Is Power’ below.

According to a press release, ‘A Complicated Woman’ is about taking back control of your own life – all while exposing the excess and additional labour that women are expected to undertake.

Self Esteem’s new album will feature appearances by Moonchild Sanelly, Nadine Shah, and Life Without Buildings‘ Sue Tompkins.

‘A Complicated Woman’ tracklist is:

1. ‘I Do And I Don’t Care’

2. ‘Focus Is Power’

3. ‘Mother’

4. ‘The Curse’

5. ‘Logic, Bitch! (ft. Sue Tompkins)’

6. ‘Cheers To Me’

7. ‘If Not Now, It’s Soon’

8. ‘In Plain Sight ft Moonchild Sanelly’

9. ‘Lies (ft. Nadine Shah)’

10. ’69’

11. ‘What Now’

12. ‘The Deep Blue Okay’

The singer appeared to be teasing new music last week when she wiped clean her official Instagram account and shared a singular post of a black title with the sentence “And now, I know you’re feeling ready for your bow,” written in the centre of it.

She shared that same post on her official X/Twitter as well as on her Instagram stories. A sign-up link was also featured on her stories which directed those who clicked to her website to sign up to her mailing list.

Back in 2021, Self Esteem was featured on the cover of NME, where she spoke about her last album ‘Prioritise Pleasure’. “I’ve done years of therapy, done plenty of work on myself, and read every fucking book you can fucking read about it, and it comes back down to true self-acceptance and self-love,” she said, speaking about the inner work she has done to be able to make music in the way she wants to.

“It’s the answer to everything, but it’s still something that you’re meant to not do. I go down this road a lot, and I get quite upset. But then I think, no – just keep in my little part of the world, my group, accepting myself, loving myself, and then make my little silly songs and do my little silly dances. And if someone can learn from that and pass it forward, at least I’m doing something?”
