Sharon Van Etten Mulls ‘Southern Life,’ Sets Tour Plans
Sharon Van Etten dips into a dark, synth-laden sound on “Southern Life (What It Must Be Like),” the second single from her upcoming self-titled album with her band the Attachment Theory (Feb. 7, Jagjaguwar). The track is accompanied by a video shot, directed and edited by Ethan Dawes, which comprises footage from a recent surprise show at the Viper Room in Los Angeles.
Van Etten, who was born in New Jersey but has lived for period of time in the South, says the new tune is about “trying to understand people with very different perspectives and backgrounds, while also trying to be compassionate towards our past, present and future selves.” It was written during rehearsals for the tour in support of her previous album, Weʼve Been Going About This All Wrong, as part of a spontaneous jam with drummer Jorge Balbi, bassist Devra Hoff and keyboardist Teeny Lieberson.
Van Etten has also fleshed out her 2025 tour plans with new North American shows, including a quick three-date run on the East Coast in February before a previously announced European jaunt.
