Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory share atmospheric new single ‘Trouble’

Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory have shared a new single called ‘Trouble’ – listen below.

The atmospheric and understated track serves as the final preview of the group’s self-titled album, which is due for release on February 7 via Jagjaguwar (pre-order/pre-save here).

“‘Trouble’ is about the idea of having to coexist with people you love who have opposing views, not being able to share deep parts of yourself and your narrative based on someone else’s beliefs,” Van Etten explained.

“A big part of you that someone who loves you can’t know because it’s not something they want to hear or are willing to learn about or understand. The painful moments, when you choose to love and respect someone else’s needs over your own to salvage a relationship.”

“I don’t want to lose your love against your will/ Blow you kisses and take a pill/ To kill/ I don’t want to lose your love against your will/ Blow you kisses and take a pill/ To kill/ I don’t want to lose you,” sings Van Etten in ethereal vocals.

She delivers her part over an infectious bassline by Devra Hoff, making way for lush and moody synths from Teeney Lieberson.

‘Trouble’ follows on from Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory’s 2024 singles ‘Afterlife’ and ‘Southern Life (What It Must Be Like)’.

The band will play three UK headline shows in March following a run of European dates. These will take place at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Albert Hall in Manchester and the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow. Find any remaining tickets here.

The new Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory moniker was introduced to fans at Van Etten’s intimate, low-profile gig at London’s 100 Club last summer.

For her upcoming album, the singer-songwriter invited her bandmates fully into the creative process for the first time. Joining her in the group are Jorge Balbi (drums, machines), Devra Hoff (bass, vocals) and Teeny Lieberson (synth, piano, guitar, vocals).

‘Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory’ was recently featured in NME‘s most anticipated album releases of 2025 list.

Van Etten released her sixth and latest studio record, ‘We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong’, in May 2022. In 2023, she shared ‘Quiet Eyes’ from the Past Lives soundtrack and the Courtney Barnett co-written single ‘Close To You’.
