Spiritbox’s Courtney LaPlante Hopeful First Woman Will Win The Metal GRAMMY This Year
It’s safe to say Spiritbox are fast becoming one of the biggest metalcore acts on earth, and in doing so, paving the way for female representation in the historically male-dominated genre. The Courtney LaPlante-fronted Canadian act missed out on the ‘metal ‘Best Metal Performance’ GRAMMY last year, a feat which would have seen them become the first act with a non-male member to ever win the trophy. Instead, the gong went to old hats Metallica.
But LaPlante is hopeful that 2025 will be the year that history is made, and not just because Spiritbox are nominated once again.
Spiritbox – ‘Perfect Soul’
“Since this award has ever existed — this award, the first year was when I was born, in 1989. There was one year when Lzzy Hale and Halestorm won when it was the Hard Rock and Metal Grammy [‘Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance’], but no woman has ever won the Best Metal Performance Grammy since it came out in 1989,” the singer and screamer told Brazilian journalist Igor Miranda in a fresh interview (transcribed via Blabbermouth).
“…I think about that every year,” she continued. “I’m almost 36 years old. 36 years, a woman’s never won. And now there are more chances than ever for a woman to win. So I’m really excited. I hope that we win. I hope that Knocked Loose and Poppy win. Or if Gojira wins, there’s a woman who’s an opera singer on that song. So there’s three out of five chances for that ceiling, that glass ceiling to finally shatter.”
Those three acts are nominated against legacy acts Judas Priest and, once again, Metallica in the ‘Best Metal Performance’ category at the 67th annual Grammy awards.
The winner will be announced in a ceremony in LA on Sunday, 2nd February 2025.
It comes as Spiritbox have announced their sophomore album, Tsunami Sea, will reach our ears on Friday, 7th March.
