On Thursday, Nov. 14, St. Paul & The Broken Bones touched down in Manhattan to kick off a four-night, eight-show run at Blue Note New York. For the first show in its series at the prestigious jazz club, the Birmingham, Ala.-based eight-piece Southern soul ensemble turned up the heat on its already red hot funk-inflected rhythm and blues, serving up a setlist specially suited to the occasion. Throughout the performance, the group centered instrumental interplay, with bandleader and vocalist Paul Janeway letting his brass backing shine on classics like the introductory “Flow With It (You Got Me Feeling Like)” and recent favorite “Wolf in Rabbit Clothes.” Other essential cuts included “Call Me,” “Waves,” and “Apollo”; between these trademarks, the band let loose, running off on numerous expansive jams and solos and even debuting a new song. A highlight arrived towards the end of the set when then group veered off from “GotItBad” into a series of solos, then splashed down into a debut cover of Outkast’s “SpottieOttieDopaliscious” before bookending the medley with “GotItBad” again. To close out the show, they turned up the longtime fan favorite “Broken Bones & Pocket Change.”
