The Grammy Awards ‘Will Proceed As Planned’ on February 2, Recording Academy Confirms
The Recording Academy confirms the Grammy Awards will continue as planned on February 2, despite the fires ravaging the Los Angeles area.
On Monday, January 13, the Recording Academy confirmed the Grammy Awards will “proceed as planned” on February 2, in spite of the wildfires that continue to ravage Los Angeles County.
In a letter to Recording Academy members obtained by Digital Music News, Recording Academy and MusiCares CEO Harvey Mason Jr. confirmed the news. Mason assures that the show, scheduled to air on CBS from the Crypto.com Arena in downtown LA will take place “in close coordination with local authorities to ensure public safety and responsible use of area resources.”
“This year’s show, however, will carry a renewed sense of purpose: raising additional funds to support wildfire relief efforts and honoring the bravery and dedication of first responders who risk their lives to protect ours,” Mason’s letter continues.
“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. This city is our home, and we mourn the loss of life and destruction of the past few days,” reads the letter. “In these challenging times, music has the power to heal, comfort, and unite like nothing else. The Grammys will not only honor the artistry and achievements of our music community but also serve as a platform to amplify the spirit of resilience that defines this great city of Los Angeles.”
The Recording Academy and MusiCares quickly launched the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort last week in response to the crisis. This effort launched with an initial $1 million donation to support music creatives and professionals affected by the fires. Thanks to additional contributions, the fund has already distributed over $2 million in emergency aid to those in need.
As of Monday morning, at least 25 people are confirmed dead in the destruction caused by the firestorm. Around 92,000 people remain under evacuation orders and 89,000 more people are in areas where evacuation warnings have been issued.
