The String Cheese Incident Nod to Bluegrass Roots With Guests in Oakland

On Saturday night, Dec. 30, The String Cheese Incident continued their New Year’s stand at the Fox Theater in Oakland, Calif. Night two saw the band nod to their bluegrass roots, picking up a series of beloved classics from their own archive in addition to covers, and welcoming two guests: Peter Rowan and Tony Furtado. Set one picked up with a pairing of “Close Your Eyes” into “Round The Wheel.” 

Following the initial songs of the night, The String Cheese Incident brought out their added company, Rowan and Furtado, to assist on “Panama Red” and an ensuing “Hobo Song.” With the guests still on stage, they collectively ran through Bob Marley’s “Concrete Jungle,”  the Rowan-scribed “Sweet Melinda,” and the Old & In The Way number “Land Of The Navajo.” 

The first set saw SCI and guests return to Marley’s songbook, covering “No Woman No Cry,” and close out the concert’s first half with another Rowan tune, this time, “ Midnight Moonlight.” Sans guests, the Colorado band returned to the stage for the latter frame, which began with “Trip The Light Fantastic,” followed by a pairing of “Lend Me A Hand” into “Shine.” 

Just Furtado joined the band next, assisting on “I Know You Rider” before leaving the unit, who went on to perform “Enjoy The Ride,” “BollyMunster,” and a pairing of “Jellyfish” into “Rosie.” For the night’s encore, The String Cheese Incident closed their second night in the Bay Area on “Shaking The Tree.”
