Track Of The Day 1/12 – Martha Skye Murphy

Martha Skye Murphy is unafraid to let aspects of her work bleed out into other areas, other disciplines.

Her new release is a self-combusting triptych, one that confronts harsh emotions, and aims to explore bold truths.

The triptych is completed by new single ‘Concrete’, a song that stands perhaps at her most finessed, most rounded, and most intense experience yet.

Slow-burning and provocative, ‘Concrete’ blends a bravura vocal performance with a haunted arrangement, all taut strings, warped electronics, and the glacial passing of time.

Co-produced by Martha Skye Murphy and Ethan P. Flynn, ‘Concrete’ is augmented by the artistry of LEYA, while Martha Skye Murphy and Nina Porter work together on the video.

A song about the relationship between hostage and captor, the visuals explore the “surrounding city environment in its constant developing yet abandoned state,” she explains.

“Nodding to the visual language of video games, I wanted the film for ‘Concrete’ to turn a static building in its harsh location from something stoic and functional into a charged site of dysfunctional memory. This concrete block can become anything you wanted, saw, imprisoned, thought or lost, it can be past or present, real or imagined. Thinking of Edward Burtynsky’s harrowing aerial photographs of large scale industrial waste and short films such as The Black Tower by John Smith, I wanted to comment on the capacity for spaces to host, entrap and influence feeling.”
