Triple J’s Hottest 100 Busts Records

Records tumbled as Triple J counted-down its Hottest 100 songs for 2023 on Saturday (Jan. 27) – the culmination of 2,355,870 votes cast.

Doja Cat became the first female rapper and woman of colour to snag top honors, as “Paint The Town Red” beat out homegrown artists G Flip (“The Worst Person Alive”) and Dom Dolla (“Saving Up”) for the win.

“When we first heard ‘Paint The Town Red’ back in August, there was little doubt that we’d see it appear at the pointy end of this year’s countdown,” comments triple j music director Nick Findlay.

“Over an iconic sample of Dionne Warwick’s ‘Walk On By’, ‘Paint The Town Red’ shows Doja Cat in her truest form: effortlessly shaking off the haters while flexing her uncanny ability at executing pure pop perfection.”

Though G Flip missed out on the big one, they set a new Hottest 100 record with seven titles in the countdown.

The record was previously held by Wolfmother, which nabbed six entries back in 2005.

The multiple ARIA Award-winner now boasts 19 career Hottest 100 entries, and appears to be catching out on the Hilltop Hoods’ all-time record of 24 songs.

G Flip is now equal third all-time with Tame Impala and Kanye West, while Powderfinger and Foo Fighters (22 apiece) are equal second.

The record books were torn up when Kylie Minogue (and “Padam Padam”) returned to the countdown for the first time since 1997, a new record for longest time between entries (at 26 years).

More than half the Hottest 100 entries – 52, to be precise – were Australian made.

Also, say reps for triple j, the youth network’s website saw the greatest number of votes coming in on the final day.

The 2.335 million-plus votes for the 2023 competition were predominantly cast by women (61%) and 45% of all voters for the latest, 31st edition can consider themselves youngsters — 24 years of age, or under.

One record that continues to stand tall is the 3.2 million votes cast for the 2019 edition, an all-time mark.
