Unearthing the Metal Underground: Greece’s Sad

Greece has birthed numerous classic black metal bands for decades. We’re talking about bands like Rotting Christ, Necromantia, Varathron and Zemial. While this week’s featured band isn’t quite as high caliber as the aforementioned heavy hitters, the Hellenic entity known as Sad has consistently released quality tried-and-true, tortured black metal for nearly 20 years. The duo, comprised of multi-instrumentalist Ungod and vocalist Nadir, is set to unleash its eighth album. Purity Through Fire will release its negative, bleak effort “Black Metal Craft” on December 23, just in time for the holidays…

Sad has not mellowed with age. The eight songs on “Black Metal Craft” maintains the downtrodden energy that’s inextricable to the essence of Sad, and they show the band more hateful than ever. Don’t call this a “Depressive Suicidal Black Metal” band. While Songs like the title track and “The Fortune Teller” are morose and gloomy, they’re biting and menacing in way that can only be expressed with complete sincerity.
