Watch: Goose’s Rick Mitarotonda Joins Mt. Joy at Out of the Blue Festival in Mexico

This past weekend, Out of the Blue Festival brought an all-star cast of soul, folk, jazz and pop artists to the Moon Palace in Cancún, Mexico. Among the participants were event headliners Mt. Joy, who used their time on the main stage on Saturday, Jan. 5, to bring out guests, including Goose’s Rick Mitaronda, who stuck around for an extensive three-piece, early set sit-in. 

Before bringing out their initial guest, Mt. Joy warmed up by beckoning to two pieces of music off their 2022 LP, Blood Orange, on “Lemon Tree” and the title track, preluding their 2024 released single, “Highway Queen.” Next, they welcomed Goose’s guitar ace to the stage. Mitarotonda added to the band’s 2019 era releases, including the Rearrange Us feature, “Let Loose,” which included a snippet of Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” before the arrival of “I’m Your Wreck” and the sequence starter’s namesake song. 

On the heels of Mitaronda’s stage time, Mt. Joy proceeded with “Phenomenon,” “Dirty Love,” and their unreleased track, “Coyote,” before moving into “Strangers,” “Bathroom Light” and a unique rendition of “Julia” complete with interludes of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” and Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy.” Michael Marcagi joined the headliners for “Silver Lining” before swapping positions with Ashe, who sat in on Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams.”
