Watch: Les Claypool Shares Billy Strings Tongue-in-Cheek Primus Audition Video

Primus’ search for a drummer has dredged up an entry from Billy Strings. 

The bluegrass golden boy’s audition video surfaced on Les Claypool’s official Instagram page this morning, along with the caption, “We may have found our guy…” 

The tongue-in-cheek entry drew further attention to Primus’ ongoing call for a drummer after Tim Alexander abruptly parted ways with the band back in October. 

Tracing the series of events that led to Strings’ submission tape, Primus first acknowledged Alexander’s departure on Oct. 29. Writing to fans and followers, “On Thursday, October 17th, we received an email from Tim “Herb” Alexander expressing that effective immediately he would no longer be involved with Primus. It came as a complete shock to all of us here in the Primus camp.”

The group’s public response triggered clarification from Alexander, who opened up to Rolling Stone about his thoughts behind the decision, citing the prioritization of mental health and physical well-being. 

In part, Alexander expressed: “When I first joined PRIMUS, I was 24 years old. I’m almost 60 now and not just a drummer but also a husband and a dad. Being a drummer for almost four decades has taken its toll on my body.”

After the dust settled, Primus took it upon themselves to open submissions to the public, “Seeking a well-mannered, affable individual with original sensibility and aesthetic, possessing a desire to open new doors in the creative world,” the band wrote on its social feeds. “Flashy chops are wonderful, but groove, pocket, and the ability to listen, react, and contribute to the musical conversation is a must.”
