Watch: Maren Morris Taps Brittney Spencer and Mickey Guyton During ‘Fallon’ Appearance

On Tuesday evening, Nov. 7, Maren Morris appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. During the appearance, the musician supported her Sept. 15, 2023 EP, The Bridge, performing a cut from the set called “The Tree.” Morris tapped Brittney Spencer and Mickey Guyton for the televised performance to assist on the number. Prior to the performance, Morris outlined the meaning behind “The Tree” via a press release outlining her project. She offered, “‘The Tree’ is about a toxic ‘family tree’ burning itself to the ground. Halfway through, I realize it’s burning itself down without any of my help. This song evokes the pain of exhausting all your love and time for this person or ‘entity’ but realizing it’s just a draining, transactional relationship that isn’t nourishing in any healthy way.”

The Fallon appearance began with Morris delivering the song’s first and second verses, supported by light instrumentation from the backing band and her own gentle acoustic riffs, building to the chorus, which flourished with high-powered vocals from Spencer and Guyton. The trio of female leads ignited the stage, breathing emotion into the already expressive number.
