Suki Waterhouse is in the midst of her biggest headlining tour to date, and she celebrated the second of two sold-out shows at Brooklyn Paramount in New York last night (Dec. 8) by welcoming the Magnetic Fields‘ Stephin Merritt and Del Water Gap‘s Holden Jaffe for surprise appearances.

Merritt joined Waterhouse and her band for a rendition of Magnetic Fields’ “Yeah! Oh, Yeah!,” from their beloved 1999 album 69 Love Songs. Waterhouse has previously name-checked the band as an influence in multiple interviews and proudly displayed their vinyl in an episode of Amoeba Records’ What’s in My Bag?

“When I was a teenager, it almost gave me permission to make music that almost felt unfinished and not so perfect, which is always the kind of stuff that I’ve been really drawn to,” she said of Merritt and company.

Later in the show, Waterhouse and Jaffe teamed for the latter’s “Ode to a Conversation Stuck in Your Throat,” from Del Water Gap’s 2021 self-titled album. The parade of special guests also featured drag legend Amanda LePore and Camila Morrone, who Waterhouse separately serenaded last night and on Saturday during “Johanna.”

Waterhouse is touring in support of her latest Sub Pop album, Memoir of a Sparklemuffin. The group visits Philadelphia tomorrow.

“I’ll be honest and say fear has always been a huge driver in terms of pushing myself,” she told SPIN this summer. “I have such a fear of being stagnant or disappearing. It is probably an unhealthy thing, but I think being on stage is my way of solving that fear.”
