Wilco’s Nels Cline, Yuka C. Honda and John Cameron Mitchell Sit in with Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah run at New York’s Bowery Ballroom continued last night. Wilco guitarist Nels Cline and his wife Yuka C. Honda opened the night with their Cup project and Jo Firestone served as the night’s guest comedian.
Cline and Honda, who supplied electronics, joined Yo La Tengo at the start of their set for “Out of the Pool” and “Little Eyes” and Cline remained on stage throughout Yo La Tengo’s entire show. Honda returned a few songs later for “Tears Are In Your Eyes.” She then sat in for the closing segment of “Above the Sound,” Velvet Underground’s “I Found A Reason,” Lou Reed’s “Waves of Fear,” Jad Fair’s “Clumsy Grandmother Serves Delicious Desert By Mistake,” “Out the Window,” “Styles of the Times,” “Tom Courtenay” and The Hondells’ “Little Honda.”
Shrill actor and musician John Cameron Mitchell, who plays in the Lou Reed cover band Eyelids, sang on the selections by Reed and his band the Velvets. Cline and Honda returned to the stage for Yo La Tengo’s encore celebration of Jewish songwriters. First, the musicians ran through the
Carole King/Gerry Goffin composition “Wasn’t Born To Follow,” and then they appeared on David Johanson/Syl Sylvain’s “Cool Metro.”
The evening’s guests then slipped off the stage while Yo La Tengo closed the night with a version of former Velvet Underground member John Cale’s ” Hanky Panky Nohow.”
